Patrick seeks disaster declaration in Uxbridge fire

UXBRIDGE, Mass. – The Mass. Emergency Management Agency yesterday established a Disaster Assistance Center at Uxbridge Town Hall, 21 South Main St., for businesses and individuals affected by the Saturday fire at the Bernat Mill complex on Depot Road.

The center will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for an undetermined period, the agency said. It will be staffed by members of the EMA’s disaster recovery staff and representatives of various other state agencies – including the Executive Office of Labor Workforce Development, Executive Office of Health & Human Services, Department of Transitional Assistance, Department of Mental Health, Division of Career Services, Division of Unemployment Assistance, Division of Insurance and Office of Small Business & Entrepreneurship – who will offer assistance and information.

More than 65 businesses employing more than 300 people were “severely impacted” by the fire, the EMA said.

The Patrick/Murray administration has requested a disaster declaration by the U.S. Small Business Administration, which would clear the way for SBA assistance. SBA representatives began inspecting the site on Sunday, the EMA said.
