States such as Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa and others are already accepting credit cards for taxes and other fees, and in Rhode Island, as of this week, the town of East Greenwich is doing the same.
Proposed legislation, introduced to the House of Representatives by Rep. Brock D. Bierman (R-Dist. 23) would expand Rhode Island government’s acceptance of credit cards beyond the Registry of Motor Vehicles (DMV), which has been taking plastic for several years.

Under the Bierman bill (02-H 6730), credit cards would be an acceptable form of payment in the state court system for all fees and fines; at the Division of Taxation for any personal income tax bill up to $250; and by the Division of Taxation and Family Court on all payments of child support. The DMV, which currently accepts credit card payment for registration and certain license fees, would be allowed under the bill to take plastic for any use taxes on motor vehicles.
