PROVIDENCE – Applied Subsea Technologies Inc., a marine science and technology company that develops and applies advanced manned-diving systems to marine science, recently signed a research agreement with Magellan Bioscience Group Inc., a St. Petersburg, Fla.-based marine biotechnology company that discovers natural products for pharmaceutical and agrochemical purposes from marine organisms.
The two companies are coordinating a series of marine expeditions to research new natural products in ocean waters in deep reefs and marine caves. The team foresees finding thousands of new macro- and micro-organisms. The campaign is slated to start next month and continue into next summer and includes researchers from academia and private industry from around the globe.
Magellan’s new technologies, coupled with Applied Subsea’s focus on bioexploration, should help discover novel molecules derived from traditionally inaccessible microbes. The partnership is expected to provide unique access to a broad range of structurally and functionally distinct compounds.

KVH unveils new technology at Army conference
MIDDLETOWN – KVH Industries introduced two new technological devices at the 2003 Association of the U.S. Army Conference last week. The company unveiled its DSP-3000 Fiber Optic Gyro (FOG) and its TG-6000 Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), allowing the company to pursue a wider range of opportunities in the military and commercial marketplaces.
The DSP-3000, based on KVH’s digital signal processing technology, provides solutions for motion sensing, stabilization, navigation and precision-pointing applications such as guided munitions navigation, industrial robotics, gun and antenna stabilization and autonomous vehicles, said Dan Conway, KVH’s vice president of business development.
The TG-6000, measuring motion and acceleration in three dimensions, is for applications that involve flight control, orientation, instrumentation or navigation, such as torpedoes, smart munitions, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The TG-6000 represents KVH’s first true tactical-grade integrated navigation system.
