The Department of the Navy in Portsmouth has been awarded an $18 million contract for the development of a system to neutralize underwater mines, Sen. Jack Reed announced Thursday.
The Airborne Mine Neutralization System will be integrated into MH-60 helicopters and will allow relocation, identification and neutralization of previously detected sea mines.

Raytheon’s Portsmouth plant will conduct 63 percent of the work for the project, which is to be completed by September 2006.
