Raytheon Company, which has a facility in Portsmouth, this week will celebrate 80 years of innovation with a series of events at operations across the United States and in the U.K.
The company was founded in Cambridge, Mass., on July 7, 1922 as the American Appliance Company, a maker of machinery, motors, and components. Raytheon today is the result of 80 years of continuous innovation, including the impressive legacies of the businesses that Raytheon has joined with over the years, including Beechcraft, E-Systems, Texas Instruments’ Defense Systems and Electronics, and Hughes Aircraft’s Defense Electronics.

Burnham will kick off the week of events today at 4 p.m. EST when he rings the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange (Coincidentally, Raytheon is also observing its 50th year as a NYSE-listed company). From Washington, D.C., to Wichita, Kans., to El Segundo, Calif., employees at Raytheon sites across the U.S. will participate in breakfasts, luncheons, receptions, and other recognition ceremonies. On Thursday, July 11, Burnham will host a reception at the company’s Lexington, Mass., headquarters to honor outstanding innovators from the company’s past and present. Joining him will be members of the company’s Leadership Team, employees and guests from the community.
Raytheon Aircraft Company (RAC) also celebrates three significant milestones this year — the company’s 70th anniversary, the 55th anniversary of the world-famous Beech Bonanza, and the 40th anniversary of the company’s fixed-base operation, Raytheon Aircraft Services. RAC was founded by Walter H. Beech and was originally named Beech Aircraft Corp.
Raytheon Systems Limited (RSL), the company’s UK subsidiary based in London, today also will launch a week of activities in observance of the U.S. parent company’s 80th anniversary. RSL has its own achievements to celebrate. The unit’s Harlow operation will be marking both the 50th anniversary of the introduction of secondary radar and the 100th anniversary of the manufacturing of the first cathode ray tube in Britain. In addition, RSL’s Broughton site will be marking Raytheon’s 40 years in aircraft servicing.
