Since the release of the 2005 Unclaimed Property listing on April 19, more than 10,000 Rhode Islanders have contacted the Unclaimed Property Division. According to General Treasurer Paul J. Tavares, the division has never received such a large response in such a short window of time.
The division said more than 1,000 inquires were made by mail and 1,000 more by phone. The remaining 8,000 contacted the division via email. Tavares said in a release that filing claims by email is an effective method that improves efficiency.
