Reporter Taricani found in contempt

Reporter Jim Taricani was convicted of contempt of court yesterday for
refusing to reveal the source of a videotape that showed a city
official taking a bribe, Bloomberg News reports.

U.S. District Judge Ernest Torres found Taricani, a
reporter with WJAR Channel 10, guilty of contempt after a non-
trial jury in Providence.

Taricani will be sentenced on Dec. 9 and may face jail time.

Taricani was originally subpoenaed by a special prosecutor
investigating corruption in the administration of former
Providence Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci. He refused to reveal
the source of a videotape broadcast by WJAR that showed a
government official taking a bribe.

The reporter was found in civil contempt of court and
ordered to pay a fine of $1,000 a day until he revealed his
source. Taricani paid $85,000 that was reimbursed by NBC
Universal. On Nov. 4, Torres suspended the fines and ordered a
trial for Taricani, the report said.
