Retailers are improving inventory management

Most of the 25 largest U.S.
retailers increased the number of times they replenished
merchandise as they better managed inventory in a slowing economy,
according to Bloomberg data.

Fifteen of the biggest retailers improved their so-called
inventory turns. J.C. Penney Co. topped the list, followed by Rite
Aid Corp., Albertson’s Inc., and Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s
biggest merchant.

The improved turnover rates resulted from conservative buying
by retailers, sophisticated computer software for forecasting
customer demand, closer relationships with suppliers and better
inventory-tracking procedures, analysts and companies said.
Turnover is considered a key retail measure, with lower rates
indicating excess inventory or ineffective retailing practices.
