CVS’ Ryan offers $1 million for convocation center
KINGSTON – URI alumnus and CVS chairman and chief executive Thomas M. Ryan has donated $1 million to the University of Rhode Island Convocation Center Campaign. Ryan, a 1975 graduate, announced his gift on behalf of himself and his wife, Cathy at the University of Rhode Island Foundation Ball. Along with Gov. Lincoln Almond, Ryan is co-chair of the Blue Ribbon Steering Committee and chairman of the Leadership Gifts Committee for the URI Convocation Center.
Schooner Adirondack II in Newport for cruises
NEWPORT – The Adirondack II, a replica of a 19th Century twin-masted schooner has arrived in Newport where it will be moored at the Yachting Center. The schooner will be available for charters and will make four daily sails around the harbor. It has a capacity of 60 passengers. The yacht will sail through September. It is owned and operated by the Newport Harbor Corporation, which also operates Castle Hill Inn and resort, the Mooring Restaurant, and Newport Waterfront Festivals.

House passes bill to block 911 use restraints
PROVIDENCE – The House of Representatives has given unanimous approval to a bill that will prohibit health insurers and HMOs from preventing subscribers who think they have a health emergency from calling 911 for help. Introduced by Rep. Suzanne M. Henseler, D-North Kingstown, the bill which she describes as proactive, is designed prevent a practice that has developed in other parts of the country that forces medical insurance and HMO subscribers to call a special number set up for their use instead of the national 911 emergency system. The bill was sent to the Senate.
Esposito Jewelry wins $150,000 technical aid
PROVIDENCE – Esposito Jewelry, Inc. has been approved by the U.S. Department of Commerce for $150,000 in technical assistance through the Trade Adjustment Assistance Programs for manufacturers. Esposito manufactures sterling silver and fashion costume jewelry. The company employs 179 workers in this city. The award will be used to cover the cost of assistance for the development and installation of an integrated manufacturing information system, the development of a marketing analysis/sales program, industrial engineering, the creative development of promotional materials and for new product design mold and model making.
CVS expanding market
WOONSOCKET – CVS Corp. announced that it would enter three new markets next year. The company will move into Chicago, the stronghold of the Walgreen Co., its chief rival; Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Orlando, Fla. A company spokesman said CVS plans to enter at least two new markets every year.
Collaborative Alliance to make new vaccine
SMITHFIELD – The Collaborative BioAlliance plant here will make a new vaccine for Nabi (the Florida based company) to combat staph bacteria infections. The vaccine will be produced in the former Alpha-Beta Technology plant here and is expected to increase the Collaborative’s employees here to 150 workers by 2002, the company announced.
CytoTherapeutics has new name
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – CytoTherapeutics, once Rhode Island’s biggest biotechnology company, has changed its name to StemCells, Inc. The name derives from the company’s current function, stem cell technology, the area on which the company focused after its lead product failed a key test last year. Since the company was already doing stem cell research here, it decided to shift its operations from Lincoln, R.I. to Sunnyvale. Now it has the name to match.
A & E Stores opening Pay/half unit at Lincoln Mall
LINCOLN – A Pay/half retail clothing store is coming to Lincoln Mall this month to replace the Cherry & Webb store that recently closed as that chain went out of business. The Pay/half store is owned by A&E Stores, Inc of Teterboro, N.J. Four former Cherry & Webb stores in this area are being converted to Pay/half units. They are in Attleboro, East Providence and North Dartmouth, as well as Lincoln. The Pay/half chain sells clothing and accessories and some home furnishing products for men, women and children. The Lincoln Mall was purchased last June by LMA, LLC, and affiliate of Churchill & Banks, Ltd. of Providence.
Job-training grants announced
PROVIDENCE – More than $500,000 in state Human Resources Investment Council job-training grants will be shared by seven companies in Rhode Island. The largest grant, $250,000, goes to Sovereign Bank. The bank recently opened offices in Rhode Island on sites previously occupied by BankBoston or Fleet Bank. Those banks, in merging had to dispose of some of their properties to meet state and federal requirements. Sovereign will use the grant to train 550 new workers, including 250 call center employees. Other recipients are Senesco of North Kingstown, a barge manufacturer, $100,000; Clean Scape, a Providence recycling company, $18,000; Albin Manufacturing, a motor yachts maker in Portsmouth, $17,200; American Insulated Wire of Pawtucket, $47,250; Nyman Manufacturing of East Providence, $55,000, and A.T.Cross of Lincoln, $40,655.
