KVH Industries gets $17 million contract
MIDDLETOWN – KVH Industries, Inc. has been awarded a five-year contract by the Army worth more than $17 million for various navigational devices to be installed in Army, Marine Corps and foreign combat military vehicles. The devices, which are called TACNAV systems for tactical navigation integrate the global positioning system data with the vehicles’ heading and position data and thus avoid signal interruptions caused by the shape of the earth or by enemy interference. The result is superior accuracy of operation for the vehicles, the KVH announcement said.
Ponagansett River corridor land acquired
FOSTER – The state of Rhode Island through the Department of Environmental Management and private conservation agencies has acquired 155 acres of choice property along the Ponagansett River for protection and recreational use. The DEM, the Nature Conservancy and the Foster Land Trust acquired the property to add to 580 acres owned by a coalition of conservation agencies, including the two mentioned plus the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. Within the 155 acres is a 31-acre site that includes the Franklin property along with the remains of a pre-Civil War gristmill, a stone dam and a 1,000 foot stone lined sluice. The announcement from Governor Almond’s office said this property would be made available to the public for fishing access and other passive recreational activities. The property was acquired by the state for $20,000 paid to members of the Franklin family. Also acquired in the corridor is the 124-acre Hayfield property on Winsor Road in Foster. This property was acquired by the Nature Conservancy and transferred to the Foster Land Trust.

Report on Quonset delayed up to a year
NORTH KINGSTOWN – The state Economic Development Corporation has announced that it will delay release of a consultant’s report on the proposed development of Quonset Point/Davisville as a container port so that the report can be incorporated into an overall strategic study of the area. The EDC is expected to award a contract for the strategic study as early as this week. Earlier reports seemed to indicate that the consultant’s report would be a key to determining whether any further pursuit of a container port was justified. Strong opposition by environmentalists and the local community along with the absence of any firm commitments from shipping companies led Governor Almond to reject an earlier recommendation from a previous consultant for a container port. Meanwhile Boston, once the leading container port in the Northeast is having its own problems. Already it has been surpassed by New York City and Halifax, Nova Scotia for container shipments. Now it is facing further losses as the Massachusetts port’s contracts with major shippers are scheduled to lapse July 3 even as the Port of New York is expected to expand and extend its agreements with the same shippers.
Edwards & Angell to merge with Boston firm
PROVIDENCE – Edwards & Angell, the state largest, and perhaps most prestigious law firm has announced plans to merge with a smaller but well established Boston company, Dike, Bronstein, Roberts and Cushman LLP. The merger is said to add to the general interest law firm that E&A projects, the expertise in patent and intellectual property protection and enforcement that Dike Bronstein emphasizes. While E&A’s 220 lawyers would seem to overwhelm the Boston firm’s 12 attorneys, the direction of the united firms seems to be more regional than local. An E&A spokesman said the company considers itself a Northeast firm, rather than a Rhode Island firm He also said that by the time the merger is complete, it is expected that there will be as many lawyers in Boston as in Providence.
BankRI adding ATMs to its coverage
PROVIDENCE – Bank Rhode Island has announced that it will add 43 ATMs to its coverage area starting July 1. BankRI said its new ATMs will be located in convenience stores as well as in areas of general accessibility, such as at T.F.Green State Airport, Bryant College. The additions, BankRI reported will bring the number of its ATMs to 58 throughout the state, compared with Citizens’ 133 and Fleet’s 119 in Rhode Island.
SEA CORP gets $11.6 million Navy contract
MIDDLETOWN – Systems Engineering Associates Corporation ( SEA CORP) has won a five-year $11.6 million contract by the Navy for systems engineering and technical analysis of its Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles and unmanned aerial vehicle programs. As the prime contractor in he program, SEA CORP will be assisted by the offices of General Physics Corporation in Middletown and Mystic, Conn.
Southwest to add service to Ft. Lauderdale
DALLAS – Southwest Airlines announced that it would provide Saturday only nonstop service between T.F. Green State Airport in Rhode Island to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, starting Nov. 4. Southwest also announced that it will add a second Saturday only nonstop between Hartford, Conn. and Orlando. The fare through July 10 for the Ft. Lauderdale service will be $99 each way with seven-day advance purchase. The full unrestricted fare for the flight is $187 each way.
