KVH, Datron reach agreement
MIDDLETOWN – KVH Industries, Inc., and Datron/Transco, Inc., of Vista, Calif., have resolved their legal differences and terminated a patent infringement suit. KVH had filed suit last February accusing Datron/Transco, a subsidiary of Datron Systems, Inc. of the infringement. In a statement released July 31, KVH announced that it had decided there was no patent infringement and that Datron had not violated a 1999 agreement between the companies. KVH, based here, produces navigation and mobile satellite communications systems for commercial and military purposes.
R.I. gets $6.3 million for T.F. Green Airport
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Federal Aviation Administration announced that it has awarded $6.3 million to Rhode Island Airport Corporation for noise abatement and improvements at the T.F. Green State Airport in Warwick. Five-million dollars of the total will be dedicated to noise abatement, which involves noise insulation for homes inn the various flight paths surrounding the airport in Warwick. The balance will be used to repair runways at the airport. The announcement of the award was made through the office of Sen. Jack Reed. Reed has been active in studying conditions and pursuing additional noise abatement funds for the area around the airport.

Officials pursue charter from R.I. to the Azores
WARWICK – Rep. Joseph N. Amaral, R-Tiverton and Elaine Robert, executive director of the state Airport Corporation, are trying to attract chartger flights from T.F. Green Airport to the Azores. Roberts said international flights weren’t possible in the past because of the busy domestic travel, but are now possible with th eopening of a “start of the art” international gate. Amaral noted that there are three existing flights to the Azores from Boston’ Logan International Airport. Amaral and Robets met with several officials from state government, airlines, federal government and a representative of the general consul of Portugal in Providence to explain their plan.
Cox adds phone service in North Providence
CRANSTON – North Providence became the 15th Rhode Island community with Cox Communications’ local and long-distance digital telephone service. Cox launched its service in February and now claims that it is available to 51 percent of television households in the state.
ProvEnergy, Southern Union agreement OK’d
PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Division of Public Utilities and Carriers announced that it had approved a settlement agreement between the Providence Energy Corporation (ProvEnergy) and Southern Union Company of Austin, Texas, along with an earlier merger agreement between the same two parties. The settlement agreement petition was dated May 31, 2000, and the merger petition was dated Jan. 27, 2000. The DPU & C orders are subject to approval by their respective shareholders. A ProvEnergy spokesman said after the announcement that the company expected to complete the merger in September. ProvGas is a distributor and marketer of natural gas, heating oil, and petroleum products as well as marketer of electricity and energy services.
Textron consolidating fastener units
PROVIDENCE – Textron, Inc. announced that its Fastening Systems group would merge its commercial and supply chain groups into a new group called Textron Fastening Systems –Commercial Solutions. William Barker, formerly with the Automotive Safety Products Division of the OEA has been named president of the new unit. Textron Fastening Systems of Troy, Mich., is described by the Providence Journal as a $2.2 billion organization.
Law protects privacy of prescriptions
PROVIDENCE – A law that results from a bill submitted by Rep. John D. Barr II, D-Lincoln will prohibit employers from looking at employees’ or prospective employees’ prescription records without written permission from the employee. Previously there was no legal restriction against employers obtaining the information through whatever means they chose. Barr’s bill became law without Governor Almond’s signature on July 22.
Nortek posts record sales
PROVIDENCE – Nortek, Inc. last week announced net sales of $604 million, the highest for any quarter in the company’s history. The second quarter sales were 11 percent higher than for the same period the previous year. Net earnings were $19 million, compared to $20 million for the same period last year. For the fist six months, net sales were $1.095 billion, up 15 percent from the same period a year ago. Net earnings of $23 million were comparable to the same period last year.
CVS earnings up 15 percent
WOONSOCKET — CVS Corp, Rhode Island’s largest public company,announced that second quarter earnings rose $186.5 million, 15 percent higher than the same periold last year. Net sales for the second quarter increased 13 percent to $4.9 billion. Pharmacy sales were 62 percent of total sales. Sales in stores opened at least a year increased 12 percent during the quarter. CVS said it opened 33 new stores and relocated 55 others during the second quarter. As of July 1, the company operated 4,082 stores.
