Rhode Island’s eGovernment portal, RI.gov, moved to the front of the eGov line when the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Planning and Accenture awarded it first place in the annual Digital Government Awards.
The award announcement took place June 25 in Washington, D.C. before nearly 1,000 government and industry executives. The award will be given to the state this Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Department of Administration building in Providence. The event is open to the public.

This high profile competition judged hundreds of applications by federal, state and local governments across the country. The RI.gov ePayment engine placed first out of 124 finalists, placing Rhode Island at the forefront of eGovernment innovation. “We are delighted with the early success of RI.gov and look forward to an ever growing eGovernment future. The ePayment engine is a big step in the right direction,” said Howard Boksenbaum, acting chief information officer.
The RI.gov ePayment engine provides state and local agencies with a means of accepting payments for online transactions. This marks the first time the state can accept credit card payments for services via the Internet. In a partnership with New England Interactive, a subsidiary of NIC, the software development, hosting and banking fees are all handled using zero tax dollars. The self-funding mechanism for the ePayment engine makes the program free to any state and local agency in Rhode Island. The first full service offering through the ePayment engine is the state’s online boat registration renewal service (http://www.ri.gov). Vehicle registration renewal will go online this summer to approximately 300,000 residents.
