Dr. Richard Walsh has been elected president of the Rhode Island Dental Association. Walsh practices dentistry at Arrowhead Dental Associates in Charlestown. Prior to entering private practice, Walsh served in the U.S. Public Health Service for four years. He has a bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and received his doctor of dental surgery degree from Northwestern University School of Dentistry. Walsh lives in Charlestown.
PBN: What are your responsibilities as president?
WALSH: As president, I am responsible for leading a professional organization that brings individual dentists together as a group dedicated to the service of the public and advancement of the dental profession through education, advocacy and member services.

PBN: In college, you studied zoology.
WALSH: Actually I was interested in biology, but UMass split biology into botany, the study of plant sciences, and zoology, the study of animal sciences, and I felt that zoology was more interesting and applicable to my career choice.
PBN: What’s new in the dental field?
WALSH: Although not a really new concept, tooth-whitening is probably the most-talked-about procedure; it’s effective, safe and patients can obtain dramatic results.
PBN: Any dental advice?
WALSH: Most oral disease can be prevented. If folks adhere to a good program of home care and take care of small problems in a timely fashion, it is relatively easy to achieve and maintain good oral health.
