Rhode Island’s fire marshal, Irving J. Owens, gave notice Friday of his retirement, saying his 10 years as the state’s top fire official will end Dec. 23, according to a statement from the governor’s office.
“Irving has dedicated his life to fire safety, and his tireless efforts to import the prevention and investigation of fires has contributed to making Rhode Island one of the leaders in fire safety,” said Gov. Donald L. Carcieri, in a prepared statement.

Irving was appointed to the post in 1995 by former Gov. Lincoln Almond, according to the statement.
