R.I. minimum wage rises; UI, TDI rates decline

CRANSTON – The R.I. Department of Labor and Training reminds employers that the Rhode Island minimum wage has gone up, effective Jan. 1, but the rates for unemployment insurance and temporary disability insurance have gone down.

The state’s new minimum wage for workers 16 and older is $7.40 per hour. More information, including exceptions, is available at www.dlt.ri.gov/lmi/business/minwage.htm or by calling the DLT at 462-8740.

The taxable wage base on which Ocean State employers pay unemployment insurance taxes has dropped to $14,000, the DLT said. The wage base was reduced because the state’s Employment Security Fund balance exceeded $175 million; as of Sept. 30, it had risen to $189.1 million.

A one-page 2007 UI/TDI Quick Reference Sheet – available at www.dlt.ri.gov/lmi/news/quickref2007a.htm – lists the new taxable wage bases, tax schedule rates, eligibility requirements and minimum weekly benefit amounts for both unemployment insurance and temporary disability insurance that took effect Jan. 1.
