R.I. to receive more than $10M for housing plans

Rhode Island will receive a total of $10,794,522 in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee announced Thursday.

The grants will be allocated to Rhode Island for statewide initiatives and will be distributed under four HUD programs: the Community Development Block Grants, the HOME program, the Emergency Shelter Grants programs and the American Dream Downpayment Initiative.

Of the award, $5,288,739 will be distributed under the Community Development Block Grants, which will be used to develop urban communities by assisting with the cost of providing housing, as well as expanding economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income citizens.

The HOME program will help expand the supply of affordable housing to low-income families by supplementing costs of Rhode Island’s housing programs; $5,065,753 has been allocated under the HOME program. The American Dream Downpayment Initiative, a new program under HOME, provides resources for down payment and closing cost assistance to low-income and minority households; the initiative will receive $96,895.
