A recent survey conducted by the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation to evaluate the mood of the state’s business community found 69 percent of the respondents were optomistic about the future. Most had plans to expand within the next six to 12 months.
Nearly 50 percent of respondents reported that their business was not impacted by the September 11 terrorist attacks. 38 percent reported a loss, and 13 percent reported an increase in business in the wake of the tragedy.

The survey was distributed to about 1,400 Rhode Island businesses. More than six percent of the total e-mailed surveys were returned. Industries represented by the respondents included tourism (nine percent), research and development (six percent), marine trade (eight percent), information technology (13 percent), retail/wholesale (eight percent), service (19 percent), and manufacturing (37 percent).
