PROVIDENCE — Rhode Island School of Design has selected international and critically acclaimed architect Rafael Moneo to design the RISD Center, a new innovative facility to be built on its campus. The RISD Center will combine the expansion of the museum of art, the library and the development of a new communal space for the RISD community. RISD president Mark Mandle said the school has received more than $12 million in gifts and pledges for the project, including a gift of $9 million in honor of Malcolm and Beatrice Chace. Based in Madrid, Spain, Rafael Moneo is considered a realist architect, meaning entering into all the complexities of a given project in accordance with the concrete presence and constituent character of its own reality, the school said.
Moneo’s best known works are the National Museum of Roman Art, Merida, Spain; the Museums of Art and Architecture in Stockholm, Sweden; the Barcelona Concert Hall and Culture Center; the “Kursaal” Concert Hall and Cultural Center in San Sebastian; the Diagonal Building in collaboration with Manual deSola Morales in Barcelona; and the Davis Museum and Cultural Center at Wellesley College, Massachusetts.

He has a gold medal for achievement in the fine arts from the Spanish Government, the gold medal of the French Academy of Architecture and the Gold Medal of the International Union of Architects. In 1996, he was named the 19th Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
