PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Technology Council (RITEC) has been awarded a grant of $2.7 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to help 750 workers learn the skills they need in the field of information technology. The two-year grant, totaling $2,727,432, will enable the Providence-based technology trade group, in collaboration with the Community College of Rhode Island and several major Rhode Island companies, to develop the Technology Partnership Project. The Labor Department awarded the funds from its H-1B Technical Skill Training Grant program to target underemployed and under-represented workers – such as women, minorities and disabled – learn the skills they need to enter such fields as software engineering, programming and tech support.
Watch Hill Partners acquires Gurnet Group
PROVIDENCE – Watch Hill Partners Inc. (WHP), a strategic technology and business process consultancy, has announced the acquisition of the Gurnet Group, a solutions practice offering strategy, design, development, and integration services. KVH announces first quarter results
MIDDLETOWN – KVH Industries, provider of high-bandwidth satellite communications products, defense-related navigation systems and fiber optic products, has reported its results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2002. Revenue for the period was $9.6 million with a net loss of $1.1 million, or $0.10 per share. By comparison, KVH reported revenue of $8.1 million and a net loss of $1.5 million, or $0.18 per share for the first quarter ended March 31, 2001.
Overall, the company’s satellite products recorded a 29 percent increase in revenue for the first quarter over the same period last year and sales of defense-related products rose 102 percent, also over the same period last year. However, these positive gains were partially offset by a 51 percent or $500,000 decline in fiber optic sales because of the delayed shipment of a product. The delay was imposed in order to meet revised customer specifications. The order is expected to ship in the second quarter.

Shazamm announces new NYC location
PROVIDENCE – Providence-based design firm Shazamm has announced the company is opening a new location on Manhattan’s East Side, to better serve the company’s New York clientele.
"This was the next logical step for us, since we have been spending so much time in New York this year," said Shazamm Chief Operations Officer Suzanne Manzler.
Daktronics to provide network of RI message signs
BROOKINGS, S.D. – Daktronics, Inc. of Brookings, S.D., will provide a network of electronic displays for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. The contract is for the design, manufacture and installation of 13 large Vanguard variable message signs, with centralized control system, to be installed along roadways in the Providence area.
Delivery and installation of the first display is to be complete by December 2002, with the remaining displays to be installed and operational by March 2003.
The value of the contract is approximately $1.8 million. The contract also includes an option for the purchase of up to 16 additional electronic signs in the next two years.
Sane Solutions teams with Optimal iQ
NORTH KINGSTOWN – Sane Solutions, developer and marketer of NetTracker Web analytics software, has announced a partnership with Optimal iQ, the interactive division of marketing services provider Marketecture, Inc. Optimal iQ will offer NetTracker clients a new level of business intelligence services including interpretation of NetTracker Web analytics reporting and integration of online visitor data with traditional offline customer data sources.
