Senate OKs $2 million for Bay Education Center
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Senate has approved $2 million for the Explore the Bay Education Center in Providence being developed by Save the Bay in Rhode Island for the area near Fields Point overlooking Narragansett Bay. Save the Bay has launched a campaign to raise $7 million for the development. The 15,000-square-foot education center would have access to Narragansett Bay and the National Estuarine Research Service. The center would provide public education activities, targeting the surrounding urban community, with the objective of increasing public knowledge of estuarine ecosystems, the announcement from Sen. Lincoln Chafee’s office said. The $2 million was included in the Appropriations Conference Report, the final spending legislation that must also be approved by the House before being submitted to the President for his signature.

Westin Hotel workers ratify contract
PROVIDENCE – Workers at the Westin Hotel have ratified a four-year contract agreement that includes raises of five to six percent each year over a four-year period for non-tipped workers, a freeze on employee contributions to their health and dental insurance plans for that four-year period and contributions by management to an employees pension plan. The contract also includes bigger raises for lower paid workers, like housekeepers and stewards. The bargaining unit represented by Local 217 of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union, AFL-CIO, includes about 300 employees
Middletown company gets $33 million contract
MIDDLETOWN – PURVIS Systems, Inc., located here, has won a $33 million contract from the Fire Department of New York City to design, fabricate and install a new emergency reporting system and electro-mechanical alarm display system. The contract was awarded in June and recently finalized, according to an announcement by Rep. Patrick Kennedy ( D-RI). PURVIS employs 50 workers at its office on West Main Road here and has done work for the New York City Fire Department for the last 27 years, according to Michael P. Lepanto, president of the company.
Founder of golf club donates $500,000 to Newport Hospital
NEWPORT – Peter de Savary, founder of the Carnegie Abbey golf club in Portsmouth, has contributed $500,000 to the Newport Hospital fund-raising campaign for its East Wing. The hospital announced that the contribution brings the campaign within $300,000 of its goal. The contribution has been designated by the hospital for what will become the Carnegie Abbey Community Health Resource Center and Health Sciences Library. De Savary attributed his contribution to his appreciation of the hospital value to the community as a result of the care and treatment he and his family received in the hospital and its staff during his recent surgery.
Citizens announces bonuses
PROVIDENCE – Citizens Financial Group announced that it would pay $1.7 million in bonuses this week to more than 5,000 of its employees below the vice president level who have been with the company for at least a year. The bonuses, which will be based on years of service and will be in this week’s paychecks, the company announced in a letter to each employee, will be between $100 and $400. In the letter, Lawrence Fish, chairman, president and chief executive of the company, praised the employees for their contributions to the company’s successful year that produced double-digit growth in its loan and deposit divisions. He called their reward a “success bonus.”
Blount Barker Shipbuilding gets ferry contract
WARREN – Blount Barker Shipbuilding has contracted to build a double-ended ferryboat for South Ferry of Shelter Island, N.Y. The 101-foot ferry will link Shelter Island with the South Fork of Long Island, a half-mile crossing. Contract terms were not disclosed. Designed by Dejong & Lebet, Inc., the boat will have a capacity of 149 passengers. South Ferry, Inc. is a family-owned business that was started by the Clark family late in the 18
th Century. The ferry will replace a 65-foot double-ender built in 1931 in Staten Island, N.Y.
$1.5 million for Rhode Island aquaculture approved
A $1.5 million appropriation for an aquaculture program at Rhode Island’s Coastal Resources Management Council has been approved as part of the fiscal year 2002 Commerce, Justice, State and Judiciary Appropriations Bill.
The funds, requested by U.S. Senator Jack Reed in a letter to Senate appropriators, would be used by the Resources Management Council to develop an aquaculture management plan for Rhode Island. The plan would enable the state to encourage greater coastal economic development such as “farming” shellfish or fin-fish in coastal waters or ponds across the state.
The bill, which has been reported out of conference and approved by both the House and the Senate, will next be sent to President Bush for signature.
