Senate to hold hearings today on prescription drugs

The Senate Health, Education and Welfare Committee is scheduled to hold hearings today on two pieces of legislation dealing with the state’s purchasing and dispensing of prescription drugs and prescription drug waste.

Senator Thomas J. Izzo (D-Dist. 13), who represents western Cranston, filed both pieces of legislation. Izzo has also filed a resolution that requests that the Department of Human Services review state prescription drug dispensing procedures and disposal requirements in long-term care facilities and issue a report within 90 days of the resolution’s passage.

“Other states are realizing cost savings through the use of automated pharmacy systems located in long-term facilities, employing single-dose or low-dose dispensing and by the legitimate return and reuse of medications,” Izzo said. “Rhode Island taxpayers could realize upwards of $2 million if we could find a way to keep perfectly good prescription drugs from being disposed of. That’s a savings for all patients.”
