MIDDLETOWN – The Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance will host a presentation on Friday, June 9, about sustainable ocean planning, part of the group’s ongoing Tech Talks series held in collaboration with the Undersea Technology Innovation Center to explore and share defense and undersea technologies.
The event’s key speaker, Sandra T. Whitehouse, has more than 20 years of experience as a consultant and ocean policy adviser, using her marine science expertise to advise nonprofits and other organizations about how to advance ocean health and sustainably develop coastal offshore projects. She currently serves as the chief scientific officer for AltaSea in Los Angeles, as well as the senior policy adviser for the Ocean Conservancy.

Whitehouse will share observations and perspectives on how Rhode Island’s corporations, universities and institutions can collaborate to harvest food and energy from the ocean and its “blue economy” to promote healthy economic development while protecting natural resources, ensuring a thriving ocean ecosystem, and being respectful of existing ocean stakeholders.
The event will be held June 9 at BRIX Restaurant at Newport Vineyards in Middletown. Registration, breakfast and networking are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., and the Tech Talk will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m.

Whitehouse, who is also the wife of U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, has served on the boards of Save the Bay, the Nature Conservancy’s Rhode Island chapter, the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting, the Aquidneck Island Land Trust, Grow Smart Rhode Island and the Consortium for Ocean Leadership.
She presently sits on the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography’s advisory board as well as the board of the National Center for Science Education. Whitehouse holds a B.S. from Yale University and a Ph.D. in biological oceanography from URI.
