Shaw’s buying 18 Grand Union stores

WEST BRIDGEWATER — Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc. announced it had agreed to buy 18 Grand Union stores. The Grand Union national chain recently was offered for sale at U.S. Bankruptcy Court auction in New Jersey. C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. of Brattleboro, Vt., won initial approval to buy 185 of the chain’s stores. C&S had been a major supplier to Grand Union. After obtaining approval to buy some of the Grand Union stores, C&S announced that it would operate some of them and sell some. Shaw’s is buying the 18 from C&S, 12 of them in Vermont, the other six in Connecticut. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
