PROVIDENCE – Splitwise, a mobile app and web tool designed to help customers split bills with friends and family, has partnered with India’s largest mobile commerce platform, Paytm, to offer integrated payment services.
The collaboration, announced Tuesday, will allow users in India to repay bills on the Splitwise mobile app using their Paytm accounts. Paytm serves as a “digital wallet” similar to the U.S. e-commerce provider PayPal. Splitwise’s partnership with Paytm marks its first payment integration launch outside the United States.

Tech-forward Twitter users in India heralded the announcement as the “biggest news of the day” and Splitwise’s “biggest update for the Indian community.”
For now, Paytm integration is available only to Android users who have downloaded version 4.1.9 or later of the Splitwise app, and Paytm only appears as a payment option if the Splitwise balance being settled is in Indian rupees.
Splitwise said in a release that iPhone and web users will be able to receive and view Paytm payments, but can’t send them, though Splitwise added the company plans to bring complete Paytm integration to the iPhone at a later date.
The Splitwise app is available at the Google Play Store for Android phones and the Apple Store for iPhones.
