The state Department of Environmental Management has acquired 200 acres to add to the state’s 1,548-acre Black Hut Management area in Burrillville. The property features rolling hills, woodlands, wetlands and 1,600 feet of frontage on Spring Lake. It also includes five small ponds, including an old quarry pond.
DEM purchased the property, located on Cherry Farm Road and Black Hut Road, from Alan and Jane Willoughby for $575,000. It will be paid out over two years with the money coming from open space bonds and hunting and fishing license fees collected by DEM. The area will be managed by DEM’s Division of Fish and Wildlife.

“Black Hut is an important recreation area for hunters and hikers in the northwestern part of the state,” said DEM Director Jan Reitsma. “Equally important is its value as part of an open space corridor and watershed protection area… the acquisition ensures that the property will remain undeveloped.”
