The R.I. Department of Labor and Training has been awarded an additional $1 million in Trade Adjustment Assistance for fiscal year 2006 from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration, U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee announced Wednesday.
The funding will continue to provide training-related services to workers throughout the state who are eligible for benefits under the TAA program.

The TAA program provides assistance to trade-affected workers who have lost their jobs as a result of increased imports or shifts in production out of the United States.
The funds have been awarded in addition to the $845,084 previously allocated to Rhode Island under the TAA program at the start of fiscal year 2006. The state has devoted all of these funds to employee training programs and thus requested an additional allocation under the Labor Department reserve account.
“With this critical training, Rhode Islanders displaced from their jobs will be given the assistance necessary to re-enter the job market as skilled applicants,” Chafee said.
