Chief state Supreme Court Justice Frank J. Williams pledged Tuesday to expedite the appeal of a judge’s ruling that would require the state to rebid its health insurance contract, which was set to begin Jan. 1, with UnitedHealthcare of New England as the chosen carrier.
Williams met Tuesday afternoon with lawyers for the state, United, and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, the losing bidder whose appeal led to the judge’s order last week.

Among the issues discussed at the meeting were the timetable for an expedited appeal process and whether the stay of Superior Court Judge Netti C. Vogel’s ruling should remain in effect pending the appeal, Williams’s office said in a news release.
After the meeting, Williams said health coverage would continue uninterrupted for all state employees while the case is adjudicated.
Williams plans to consult with the three other Supreme Court justices who will be hearing the case and issue an order setting up the protocol for the appeal on Wednesday, according to the news release.
