A favorable job market is predicted for the Providence area this fall, according to the latest Manpower Staffing Services Employment Outlook Survey.
“The Employment Outlook Survey results reveal that 30 percent of companies contacted are inclined to hire more people for the October-December period while 10 percent are preparing for fewer personnel,” said Sheldon Sollosy, president of Manpower Incorporated of Providence. “Of the remaining, 53 percent will maintain current staffing levels and seven percent have not finalized their projections.”

Sollosy added that for the 2000 year-end survey, the outlook was bright when 27 percent anticipated adding workers and none intended to cut back. The hiring pace was strong three months ago, as 33 percent issued recruitment plans and 3 percent reported reductions were in order.
For the fourth quarter, job creation is likely in durable and non-durable goods manufacturing and education. Staff reductions are planned in construction, while mixed readings are reported for wholesale/retail trade and services.
Across the nation, employment is expected to remain near historically low levels as 24 percent plan further hiring, 11 expect staffing declines, 60 percent anticipate no change and 5 percent are uncertain. In the final quarter of last year, 32 percent said they would increase staff, only 7 percent projected reductions, 57 percent predicted no change and 4 percent were undecided.
Manpower’s Employment Outlook Survey, which is conducted quarterly, is based on telephone interviews with nearly 16,000 public and private employers in 485 U.S. markets.
