Textron-Boeing V-22 should not be canceled, panel says

WASHINGTON (Bloomberg) — The Textron Inc. and Boeing Co. V-22 Osprey aircraft
program shouldn’t be canceled, according to a panel commissioned by the U.S. Defense
Department. “There are no inherent design flaws with the concept of the tilt-rotor,”
said Retired Marine Corps General John R. Dailey, chairman of the panel. “We have
identified areas that we believe need to be addressed before it goes operational
and into full production and we are recommending that the program continue.” The
panel’s recommendations are good news for a $38 billion weapons program — the
Pentagon’s sixth-largest — that’s been marred by allegations of falsified maintenance
records and four crashes since 1991 that killed 30 Marines.
