Textron, Grumman compete for Navy contract

Northrop Grumman Corp. aims to win
the U.S. Navy’s next-generation warship contracts by using its
accumulated know-how on developing high-tech aircraft, the Los
Angeles Times reported.

Northrop, best known as a military aircraft builder, has
become the world’s largest military shipbuilder after acquiring a
series of defense companies, including Litton Industries Inc. and
Newport News Shipbuilding, the newspaper said.

The Navy plans to spend about $15 billion on a fleet of
about 60 lightweight, high-speed patrol ships, the paper said.
Northrop, which has proposed the LCS vessels to be made entirely
of fiber composites and powered by electric jet engines, is
competing with companies including General Dynamics Corp.,
Lockheed Martin Corp. and Textron Inc. for the contract, the
paper said.

Northrop’s ship unit, which has more than 35,000 employees,
had about $5 billion in revenue last year, about a fifth of the
company’s total sales, the paper said.
