Fundamentally, any business has the potential to be successful, but the ability to promote group synergy, to inspire teamwork, often distinguishes the business leaders from the crowd.
It has long been acknowledged that human resources are a business’ most valuable asset. A business is dependent upon a variety of individuals such as technical experts and laborers, leaders, managers, facilitators and organizers.
When we join an organization, we hope to blend our expertise, experience and individuality with our fellow employees and the business mission. In this way, we derive personal fulfillment and contribute to the success of the business. The natural inclination is to fit in, but the potential for isolationism and competition remains considerable; it is here that the team-friendly business emerges as a recipe for success.
Business success is predicated in large measure upon attainable goals that are openly communicated and understood by all staff. A vision is conceived, a mission is derived and a business is born.
We provide guidelines, procedures and standards, which control processes and allow us to deliver products and services with consistency and quality. These ingredients are the fundamental building blocks of business though they cannot assure business success. It is not enough to develop a plan, to disseminate its detail and to instruct staff to comply. Blind faith is volatile, shallow and unsustainable.
The ability to harness the collective energy of our human resources, to develop a team-friendly environment and foster the growth and vitality of teams is a means through which business success can be realized. The teamwork model is a business culture model. It is an inherent physical quality of the business. It requires commitment at all levels and it necessitates careful selection of staff – people who can recognize and benefit from the synergy that is developed and sustained by teams.
The team model is inherently simple. If we work together, each of us providing what we do best and we appreciate how each of us sustains our common goals, we arrive at the goal more quickly and with a greater degree of fulfillment.
There is little question of the value of teamwork and the role it plays in business success. It is after all a matter of choice. Do I wish to be successful, readily prepared to respond to external and internal change, to be at the leading edge of my industry and to enjoy what I am doing? If you answer yes to any of these questions then perhaps it is time to take the first steps to creating a team-friendly business.
