URI to present $140 million bond issue to legislators

University of Rhode Island will present a plan to build three new science buildings on the Kingston campus to lawmakers this fall. The proposed new facilities include a $65 million pharmacy building, a $50 million chemistry building and a $25 million nursing school. The buildings would be connected by glass walkways and a circular hub to a $50 million biotechnology building, the construction of which was approved in a statewide referendum last fall.

The university’s administration has said it will present the $140 million plan this fall, asking legislators to put the bond issue before voters to pay for the buildings. Passage of the bond would be the largest higher education bond in state history.

Rep. Kenneth Carter, D-Saunderstown, said he supports the proposal.

“I strongly support the proposal to expand science programs, and I applaud the administration and participating biotech companies for recognizing that the partnering of state and private industry will further the university, students and entire state,” Carter said.

Carter said he supports the proposal because with the biotech center scheduled to open in September 2008, it will allow for vital improvements to the science programs at the university.

If approved, the three new buildings would be added over several years.
