U.S. durable goods orders decline, but shipments rise

The U.S. Census Bureau released a report on durable goods orders, shipments and inventories today.

According to the report new orders for manufactured durable goods decreased in August by $1 billion, or 0.5 percent. It was the second consecutive decrease.

But shipments of manufactured goods in August were up $4 billion, or 1.9 percent. Unfilled orders also increased, by $2.4 billion, or 0.4 percent, the bureau said, and inventories went up by $0.7 billion, or 0.2 percent.

Non-defense new orders of capital goods, however, last month decreased by $2.5 billion or 3.5 percent.
