Vacant Seekonk buildings undergoing redevelopment

Developers are reconstructing a vacant Home Depot and a Stop & Shop on
separate lots along Route 6 in Seekonk to accommodate a Dick’s Sporting Goods
and Bed Bath & Beyond.

The old Home Depot building that has been vacant for more than a year is being built by Berkshire Development, of Springfield, Mass., in to the sporting goods store, not far from a Sports Authority. Part of the building and the lot will also be used for three additional businesses.

Pittsburgh-based Dick’s Sporting Goods will occupy 54,116 square feet. The three other facilities being constructed will range in size from 5,000 to 20,000 square feet, the developer’s Web site shows. Along with the Dick’s Sporting Goods, Berkshire is considering a Panera Bread. The developer projects that the project will result in 120 employees – 100 for retail and 20 for Panera.

The plan also calls for 557 parking spaces, though Seekonk Town Planner Sandy Conaty expects revisions this week.

Representatives from the company were not available for an interview. The Home Depot left its facility on Route 6 to build a larger one down the road just over a year ago, Conaty said.

The Stop & Shop and Home Depot now share a plaza.

The old Stop & Shop building is being made in to a Bed Bath & Beyond under developer DL Poulin of Brunswick, Maine.

The Bed Bath & Beyond store will likely open in December. It will be 25,000 square feet and will have 411 parking spaces, DL Poulin Project Manager Ryan Bernier said.

The store will be small compared to most Bed Bath & Beyond stores. Corporate information from the New Jersey-based company says the stores range in size from 30,000 to 50,000 square feet, with some stores exceeding 80,000 square feet.

Cost of construction will exceed $1 million, Bernier said.
