Viking Power to do testing, design at Harris Mill

Manalapan, N.J.-based Viking Power Services Inc. Tuesday announced an agreement with Johnston-based New England Alternative Energy Corp to begin initial testing for the planned reactivation of the hydroelectric plant at Harris Mill in Coventry.

Viking was to immediately begin the initial testing and design phase at the mill. That was to include both “meggar testing” of the existing generator, and calculating the maximum torque that could generated by the water flow at the mill, based on measurements provided by NEAE.

Viking then is to advise NEAE as to whether it should replace, repair or refurbish the mill’s existing generator and hydroelectric turbine.

“We are especially pleased that NEAE and Viking can be an instrumental part of Rhode Island Gov. Donald L. Carcieri’s commitment to renewable energy,” said NEAE President Robert Hainey. “We believe this initial project at Harris Mill can be used as a template to help pave the way to bring more hydroelectric power and renewable energy to the residents of Coventry and eventually throughout Rhode Island.”

“Hydroelectric power is an important step toward reducing our reliance on traditional energy resources and moving toward renewable energy,” said Jay Sikora, president and COO of Viking Power Services. “We are pleased to be involved in the beginning stages of executing a project that utilizes Viking’s unique ability to coordinate engineering, planning, budgeting and labor.

“As a result of the initial testing phase of the Harris Mill project,” Sikora added, “we have received additional inquiries from municipalities seeking similar energy solutions.”
