Washington Trust promotes wellness

The Washington Trust Company is among Rhode Island’s most active employers when it comes to promoting health and wellness, and it has won the Rhode Island “well workplace” award for the last two years and been nominated for a national award. Here’s some of what the bank has done, on its own and with help from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island:

• Instituted a smoke-free campus in August 2004. The bank also reimburses employees $100 per year for smoking cessation. A staffer who quit smoking also helps co-workers quit.

• Offers a bi-annual wellness clinic, with blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings as well as health needs assessments; it has also held skin cancer and bone density screenings.

• Organized a walk after work group.

• Developed a 10-K-A-Day walking program to encourage workers to take the stairs and walk as much as possible while at work.

• Offered “healthy back” training, free sessions with personal trainers, and free sessions with a nutritionist.
• Sponsored Weight Watchers at Work, and partially reimburses employees for the cost of other weight reduction programs.

• Offers stress reduction classes.

• Sends out a bi-weekly “wellness” e-mail to workers on topics such as stress reduction, preparation for the holidays, child safety, preparation for school, coping with loss, etc., and sends out a monthly “management tips” email with advice for managers.
