New Program Lets Donors Honor Active Members, Veterans, and Fallen Heroes
PROVIDENCE, RI, June 04, 2010—The Rhode Island Tree Council recently introduced a program designed to honor members of the armed services. Through the Trees for Troops program a person can donate a tree on behalf of a past or present member of the armed services and have it planted in either a Rhode Island public park or a cemetery. Every tree planted comes with a three-year caring program. Donations are $275.00 per tree. Those interested in donating trees can download an application from RITree’s Web site (www.ritree.org) or call the organization at 401-764-5885 for an application.
“There are numerous reasons why people may want to donate trees,” says Vern Current, treasurer, RITree Council, and a Viet Nam veteran who served in the distinguished 1st Infantry Division, The Big Red One. “They may want to do it out of respect for a veteran, to honor the memory of a fallen hero, or to support a family member or a friend in the armed services. They may also want to donate a tree just to say thanks to someone for serving our great country, the United States of America.”
The donor or RITree selects the tree’s location. Tree selection—either ornamental or shade—depends on site suitability. Every tree is a high quality nursery sapling between 8 and 10 feet high. A tree purchased before February 1 is planted the following spring. A tree purchased after February 1 is planted the following fall.
The tree comes with a photograph of the planting and a certificate of authenticity, identifying both the donor and the military honoree. The certificate also identifies the planting location, tree type, planting date, and GPS coordinates.
The Rhode Island Tree Council is a non-profit, tax-exempt group dedicated to improving the state’s tree resources. Composed of members, professional consultants, and volunteers, the Council administers its programs through its Board of Directors, Advisors, and Trustees. RITree’s mission is to create healthy urban and community forests, which underpin the state’s verdant ecological tapestry, support its vibrant economy, and enrich the lives of residents.
