The MacColl Field YMCA School Age Childcare Program has achieved national accreditation.
The after-school program, for children in kindergarten through grade eight, is operated by the YMCA of Pawtucket’s MacColl Field branch, at 26 Breakneck Hill Road, Lincoln.
Its performance in a two-day audit by the National AfterSchool Association won it the status of Nationally Accredited Afterschool Program. The Pawtucket YMCA news release noted that only four other after-school programs in Rhode Island, and no other YMCA programs, have gained this accreditation.
The Phoenix-based National AfterSchool Association, founded in 1987, is dedicated to the development, education, and care of children and youth during their out-of-school hours. Its auditors reportedly cited the MacColl Field program for the following strengths:
Staff relate to children positively and respectfully and are constantly engaged in conversation and activities.
Program space is well organized and spacious.
Children’s arrivals and departures are carefully supervised with two-way communication devices used to ensure communication.
Program and staff protect children’s health and are aware of their individual health needs.
Staff work well together as a team, are flexible in their roles, and model the “character counts” pillars they promote.
