PROVIDENCE — Gov. Lincoln Almond, speaking at a press conference yesterday, called upon Providence Mayor Vincent A. Cianci to resign from his post, citing the mayor’s indictment on corruption charges.
Almond said he does not believe Cianci, who has been indicted on 30 counts related to Operation Plunder Dome, will be able to do his job effectively as he fights the corruption charges.

Cianci currently is in Washington, D.C., where he is taking part in the U.S. Conference of Mayors. His arraignment, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Lovegreen, is scheduled for Friday.
