AMC agrees to buy General Cinema

NEWTON – AMC Entertainment, Inc. has agreed to purchase General Cinema as part of that company’s Chapter 11 reorganization plan. AMC is one of the survivors of the recent series of bankruptcies involving over-built theater chains. According to the Associated Press, AMC would pay General Cinema corporation creditors an estimated $175 million to $195 million in cash, AMC notes and stock, dependent on what the bankruptcy court determines from claims amounts. General Cinema is based in Newton. AMC is the largest publicly traded movie theater chain in the United States, the AP said.
