Applied Radar Inc. of North Kingstown announced Friday (Sept. 8) that it has been awarded a $2.2 million contract with the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) to develop advanced radar technology.
The company is develop a device – an advanced RF circulator, using gallium arsenide (GaAs) based microchips – that will help to separate strong, transmitted radar pulses from the weaker echoes from targets.

“The GaAs microwave integrated circuit technology emplyed is much more controllable than bulk ferrite devices typically used,” said William Weedon, Applied Radar’s president and CEO, “and allows much greater signal separation than previously possible.
“This novel technology is of great interest to the U.S. Air Force because an airborne platform, such as an aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicle, has limited space for sensors and antennas.
“The device will allow the ability to transmit and receive simultaneuously, from the same antennae,” Weedon explained, “and hence provide multiple sensing or communications functions at the same time.”
