Changeover to Webster takes shape

Waterbury, Conn.-based Webster Bank will find its way into FirstFed bank Tuesday, April 5, when branches of Swansea-based FirstFed officially convert to Webster.

None of FirstFed’s existing branches will close as a result of the conversion, said Brenda Farrell, assistant vice president of public affairs for FirstFed, a division of Webster Bank N.A.

“Webster will be adding two branches in Rhode Island in 2005,” Farrell said, “one in Barrington and one in West Warwick.”

FirstFed customers wondering what the change means for them have little to worry about, Farrell said.

“Customers won’t need new checks, ATM cards or account numbers,” Farrell said. “We expect staffing levels to stay the same. The employees in the branches will be the same people that have been there all along.”

New Webster credit and debit cards will be mailed some time after the bank’s computer conversion is complete. Farrell said she was unsure of a timeline for receiving new cards, but the bank will be working on the computer conversions through the summer.

FirstFed customers have already been seeing co-branded statements from Webster. Posters in those branches have been up for weeks, Farrell said, so customers are aware the change is coming.

Twenty-six FirstFed branches will be involved in the conversion, Farrell said.
