CVS, Brooks close to buying Eckerd stores

Woonsocket-based CVS Corp. and the parent company of Brooks Pharmacy are close to a deal to acquire Eckerd drugstores from J.C. Penney Co., the Wall Street Journal reported today.

The Journal reported that the two pharmacy chains will split the 2,800 Eckerd stores. The two companies are expected to pay approximately $4.4 billion for the stores. The deal is expected to be announced within a week, the newspaper said.
