Reaching the end of its 10-year lease agreement for its current space at the Westin Providence hotel, the R.I. Economic Development Corporation announced Wednesday that it will relocate its Providence offices to the new American Locomotive Works development site.

The site, located at 550 Valley St., is being developed by Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse.

In preparation for the relocation, the EDC held an open request for proposal process to solicit bids from across the state. The EDC and its board of directors, chaired by Gov. Donald L. Carcieri, reviewed eight possible site locations managed by five developers.

The EDC said its move should help catalyze the redevelopment of the Olneyville neighborhood and add to a momentum that is transforming what has for many years been an economically underperforming area of the state.

The relocation of the EDC offices will occur in January 2007. The lease at the Westin expires in December of this year.
