BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sept. 13, 2001–In response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, FleetBoston Financial today announced a commitment of $1 million to disaster relief organizations. These funds will serve both to match the individual contributions of Fleet’s 50,000 employees, and to meet the additional needs of victims and their families as they arise.

“We are also gratified by the outpouring of support, in both dollars and volunteer time, from our employees, who are rallying to help both their colleagues and the community at large,” said Chad Gifford, president and chief operating officer of FleetBoston Financial.
As part of its $1 million commitment, Fleet has so already committed $100,000 to the American Red Cross.
In addition to these early efforts, FleetWorks, the company’s employee volunteer program, has begun mobilizing to provide staff support and food to various relief organizations. Fleet will give paid time off to company volunteers and to employees who are called up for military service.
FleetBoston Financial today also announced that all 1,700 branches in New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are now accepting donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
The Red Cross is deploying personnel to New York City to support the emergency relief efforts, collecting blood donations and opening shelters.
Donations can be made at any Fleet Bank in the aforementioned areas. Checks should be made payable to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund.
