Fortune Brands’ Acushnet awarded $1.7 million in golf club case

Fortune Brands Inc.’s golfing unit Acushnet Co. was awarded a $1.68 million cash settlement from a lawsuit against makers of knock-off versions of its Titleist and Cobra brand golf clubs, the company said.

Acushnet, which makes Titleist, Cobra and FootJoy brand golf products, had sued defendants R.J. Liou, Kent Graphtec, Kent International, Steven Almo and Golf Coast Inc., in December 1997 claiming infringement of various patents and trademarks.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court Central District of California, Western Division, claimed that several of the defendants had sold drivers, irons and putters made to look like Acushnet products, including King Cobra irons and metal woods, Titleist’s 975 series of metal woods and Scotty Cameron putters.
