Natural gas in the eastern half of
the country fell amid reports of moderating weather in the Midwest
and Northeast.
Gas bought today is for delivery Sunday and Monday. Heating demand in the Northeast will
top normal levels by 11 percent Sunday before plunging to 12
percent below on Monday, reports said said. Utilities and distribution companies avoided next-day
purchases for the first of the month and instead bought contracts
for the whole month, according to Janet Coy, marketing chief at
Houston-based Enbridge Energy Partners LLP.

“Most of the people that needed it got their capacity taken
care of several days ago by buying for the whole month,” she
said. “They’re looking for a cold February after January turned
out to be colder than many were expecting.”
