Providence-based construction company Gilbane is expanding its level of integrated services throughout its 21 offices in the continental United States and Puerto Rico. Having served the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries’ facilities needs through a process group (Gilbane Advanced Technologies sector) and through its regional offices for more than a decade, Gilbane has formed Gilbane LifeSciences to provide facility services for its clients.

Through this expanded focus, Gilbane plans to place more of its resources closer to its customers. All of Gilbane’s local teams plan to use knowledge-sharing tools so that its experts in biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical devices can collaborate more effectively. Gilbane is ranked by Information Week Magazine as the No. 1 user of technology in the construction and engineering industries.
Gilbane’s entire team will continue to offer its full range of services from pre-construction through validation and offer it along a continuum of facilities from research and pilot facilities to large-scale and secondary manufacturing projects.

For Gilbane that means one of our 21 offices across the United States and Puerto Rico, including a continuing presence in North Carolina’s research triangle park,” said Phil Southerland, senior vice president of Gilbane LifeSciences, in a release. Southerland, who had previously managed Gilbane’s advanced technologies sector, will now lead the company’s Life Sciences Group nationally.
The number of employees focused on this market sector as a priority will increase as a result of this new initiative and will increase the company’s presence in the market sector. Gilbane is ranked by Engineering News Record as the sixth-largest builder in pharmaceuticals. The company has provided construction management services for companies such as Pfizer, Astra-Zeneca, Human Genome Sciences, GlaxoSmithKline and Bayer.
Associated with the national LifeSciences group is a specialized Homeland Securities component that delivers particular expertise on bio-defense and high containment facilities. Primarily associated with clients in the public-sector and institutional markets, this group will be led by Jeffrey C. Schramm, vice president.
