Group launched by Calif. health care system donates $105K to R.I. nonprofits

PROVIDENCE – A national charitable group has announced a total of more than $100,000 in donations to three nonprofits in the Ocean State.

The MolinaCares Accord, a nonprofit launched in August 2020 by California-based Molina Healthcare Inc., says support of the organizations is part of its mission to improve quality of life at a community level.

United Way of Rhode Island received $50,000 from the group for its Non-Profit Innovations Lab, designed to promote innovation within nonprofits to create programs focused on housing, health equity and solutions to racial disparity.

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank was given $25,000 to support its Healthy Habits: Eating Well on a Budget program, which teaches participants to cook and eat healthy on a limited budget.

Family Services of Rhode Island received $30,000 in support of its Project Support Ocean State, a federally funded program that helps young people who are impacted by the opioid epidemic, as well as people who are at risk of or living with HIV.

“The work of Rhode Island’s nonprofit community is vital to the overall well-being of our neighbors, as well as our state’s ability to thrive, and we are grateful to be among the recipients of MolinaCares’ generosity,” said Cortney Nicolato, United Way of Rhode Island CEO and president. “Too many Rhode Islanders continue to struggle with challenges made worse by the pandemic and these funds will help ensure nonprofits have the resources to meet what has become a new wave of need.”
