After six years of collaborative research, federal grants of about $2 million, and exhaustive testing through several unpredictable hurricane seasons, the URI Computer Model developed by URI Graduate School of Oceanography Professors Isaac Ginis and Lewis Rothstein has become an official component of the national hurricane prediction system used to forecast Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico tropical storms and hurricanes.
”With more accuracy in predicting both the track and the intensity of hurricanes, people should pay attention when forecasters report on where a hurricane is going and how strong it is,” said Rothstein. “The margin of error is now 90 miles of coastline when the storm is 24 hours from landfall. Given a full day’s lead time, that’s very accurate.”
The coupled model will run at NOAA’s National Center for Environmental Prediction with forecasts provided, in real time, to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The NHC will use this forecast, together with information from other models, to issue and overall forecast.
Aerovox reports second quarter results
Aerovox Incorporated, of New Bedford, reported second quarter net sales of $30.1 million compared with $30.6 million for the same quarter last year, which the company said reflects the continuing impact of downward pricing capacitors in the motor market. Sales for the six-month period were $60.3 million versus $59.0 in 1999. Gross profits for the quarter were down by $.8 million from $6.1 million in 1999 in part from pricing pressures, but more significantly as a result of costs from restructuring activities.
As previously announced, management projected an acceleration of moving expenses during the final three quarters of 2000 as the company closes two of its plants in Juarez, Mexico and begins transferring production lines from the existing New Bedford facility into its new plant, also in New Bedford.
Aerovox manufactures film, paper and aluminum electrolytic to capacitors. The company sells its products worldwide, principally to original equipment manufacturers as components in electrical and electronic equipment.
Innovative Clinical Solutions gets new contract
ICSL Network Management, a Providence-based division of Innovative Clinical Solutions, LTD. that provides management services to single and multi-specialty networks of providers announced that is has finalized a contract with Fallon Community Healthplan. The agreement includes the development and management of a chiropractic network in the state of Mass. representing 67 chiropractors and more than 220,000 patients. Contracted services include claims processing, utilization management, quality management, provider relations and credentialling.
In addition, the contract brings the number of chiropractic providers to 1,364, which includes approximately 3.5 million patients within 29 states.

Globix to open Internet Data Center
